Peter has long championed the adoption of artificial intelligence, machine learning and smart automation, particularly in trade. This stems from his early years as a founder, programmer and then Director of Research at the Glasgow-based Turing Institute. During the 1980s the Turing Institute became the largest AI laboratory in Europe, with around 100 staff. He helped secure key funding from NASA, the European Space Agency, BA, Westinghouse, ICI, ABB, Dräger, Esprit and the DTI Journeyman Scheme.
Before joining the Turing Institute, Peter received funding from The Royal Society to study for a PhD in what became AI, at Cambridge and Sheffield.
Personal achievements at the Turing Institute:
- Helping build the NASA Space Shuttle Auto-lander using the ID3 machine learning algorithm (1983), with Charlie Reece of Radian Corp.
- Securing funding from S.W.I.F.T. to build an intranet-based web (1988).
- Designing and building one of the first passive 3D cameras (authored MSSM) (1989).
- Conceiving and running the First Robot Olympics (1990).
- Writing over 50 research papers and three books on artificial intelligence, machine learning, advanced robotics and computer vision applications.
